Balsa and Reclaimed 100 Year Old Redwood 5'10" Quad Fish

Dennis and Dan have been busy on their next project, a scrap Balsa (waste from a few long boards) and 100 year old reclaimed redwood 5'10" Quad Fish. The board is chambered out and is set to weigh in at 10 pounds glassed. That is most likely the weight of a glossed and polished foam 6' fish. The redwood used is from a recycled water tower on his property. The wood is surprising light on it's own because of the age but once chambered it is exceptionally light.

One Of My Favorite Boards - Murphy Breakers - Calvin "Stingray" Sullivan

Here is a shot of a Murphy shaped Breakers board (center) that Calvin "Stingray" Sullivan sent in with the story behind it.

In 2006 I went to Plumeria to see what kind of boards they had, and there was the very slighty used Murphy "Breakers" board, a 9'-0". I instantly had to have the board, but I did not have the money to buy it. I asked if they would let me pay them a little each payday and they agreed. A few hundred bucks each payday, and a month later I was the proud owner of a Dennis Murphy board. That store, Plumeria, went out of business shortly afterwards. I went to the Longboard Grotto in Encinitas and bought a red fin to go on it (also now out of business), then I took it to San Onofre to try it out for the first time. "The Murph" has been one of my favorite boards ever since. I especially like it on bigger days, since its a bit shorter and thinner than my big Brewer Noserider.

Murphy 9.0 in Fiji

Chris Miller has been spending some quality time in Fiji with his Murphy quiver. Here is a shot he emailed me just before he took off for his second two week stay. He got a camera 3 days before the end of his last trip so this time he has promised to shoot plenty and send us shots. See the Foster Surf Adventures Blog for photos of him surfing.

Sea Foam Green Beauty

Chris just got back from Fiji. He spent two weeks surfing some of the best waves of his life and making friends that will last a life time.  Now that he is back he is already figuring out how to go back.  Here he is with one of the boards that Dennis had waiting for their owners.  He really liked this one. It was a 7'1" sea foam green resin tent swallow tail quad.

5'10" Blue and Red Quad Fish

Today Chris and I met up with Dennis at his Sorrento Valley shaping room. We heard he had a few boards to deliver so we decided to stop by and take a look.  Chris took Cowboy Dan out for a surf and I hung out and talked shop.  When I got to there I noticed right away a custom fish that he had waiting for a customer. She was all bagged up and ready to go but I couldn't help but open her up and take a few shots.  She was a beautiful board.  5'10" Quad with blue bottom resin tint and red resin tint top.  I wish I could have taken her home.

My Murphy Quiver - Jason Werbelow

A while ago I asked Jason Werbelow, long time Murphy enthusiast, to send me a shot of his quiver to share. We posted a mini quiver of his a while back but this is the full version. I've been wanting to show case the Murphy quivers out there. If you have one that you want to show off send us a shot and we'll post it. 

Here is the line up and note from Jason. I've ridden the 5'10" Quad and loved it.

5'10" - Quad Fish 
6'0" - Twinny
6'6" - Thruster (green)
6'10" - Thruster (Blue Stripes)
7'3" - Thruster Round Pin (White)
9'0" - Comp Longboard

This quiver has been built over the last 15 years that I have known Dennis. Each one has had it's modifications and many discussions revolving around the conditions I was hoping to surf them in and the direction my style of surfing was moving. I never have dimensions, rocker, length or fin set up in my mind when I go to Dennis. We just sit down and talk about family, friends and surfing, then before we know it we've come up with our latest creation for me to cruise the waves of North County. I have yet to get a board from Dennis that I haven't liked.
