Noel and Merriment

Jeffrey Swartwood got a new holiday present. He has lived in the coastal area of France for over 10 years now, working and raising his children, but when he comes back to San Diego he still gives Dennis the call. He ordered this board two months ago in anticipation of his holiday trip to San Diego this year. He picked this 9'-2" RPTNR up last week and was stoked! It has a rounded pin-tail, cedar and bass stringer, honest red tint, red glue lines and a 2 + 1 fin set-up incorporating FCS Fusion side fins.

Winter Solstice

December 21st marks the first day of Winter here in the northern hemisphere.
This shot is from last Winter, Winter of 2009/2010.
Here's hoping this Winter brings some of these gems with the coming New Year.
J.P. Marengo in the slot as woman's World Longboard Champ Jen Smith paddles out with a front row seat. This is a classic shot that should be a damn poster!

Old and Brown: But Still inTown

Was at a garage sale in Point Loma awhile back and this guy had a back yard strewn with all kinds of old boards, watercraft and boating stuff. It was really quite an interesting scene. Off in the corner I spotted this old, brown Iron Cross that Dennis shaped back in the 90's. Looks like it could have been a team riders board, maybe Meyers... maybe 98 model. She was sun damaged, a little hard around the edges, but she still had a pulse.

A Couple More from that Day

That's what Aaron Goulding wrote to J.P. when he sent along these photos. I wish "that day" would come again, and soon. It's still FLAT here in San Diego with otherwise good surfing conditions (light wind, sun, etc.) I'm always amazed, and a bit dumb founded, as how the Pacific Ocean has this fetch of Thousands of miles and does not generate a thigh-high wave to ride. Hopefully this post will change that!

Jen's New Board

This summer Andre Bukich and his lovely wife Jen came in to order a new Comp model for her. Notice the super-custom logos. That was the first time that I met her, but Andre and I are old friends from the glass-shop formerly known as PSG. It's always great to re-connect with my old surf buddies and likewise pleasing to see how they've grown in life. Andre is doing very well with his own business and family. Brodie is a future Murphy rider to be sure. Thanks Jen for finding our 'Boyshop' . He's a great guy!! Muchos Aloha, Dennis

I wanna ride Momma's board!

The Waiting Period

J.P. Marengo lives in La Jolla California. He likes to hunt. Big waves. He's getting ready to kill something - he likes game from the North/West angle. Right now it's cold. Flat. Here's his new gun (The Longun) custom built by Dennis. It's locked and loaded. The 8'-6" pintail is loaded with glass-on fins. No BS'ing around when it's time. He keeps waiting. Patiently.

ENZO

Enzo Egg shaped for San Diegan Scott Parker. Here it is in his own words:

Dennis, I wanted to thank you again. This was my first custom board and the experience was amazing. You are a great person to do business with, the guys over at Diamond Glassing were also a pleasure, and Bill and Todd over at Fins Unlimited are awesome! Please thank those guys for me when you talk to them. Thanks again for an experience I would have never had if I just picked up some pop-out off the rack. It was a lesson in surf culture and history! Well worth it!

I'm Broke and Need Some Stoke!

Stoked and Broke Virtual Premiere This Friday, Saturday and Sunday ONLY
OK. This virtual world is kinda freakin me out, but this sounds cool. You can watch this interesting movie made by San Diegan Cyrus Sutton. Cyrus made it last winter or spring and it took a while to get released. We missed the showing at La Paloma but they are doing an online virtual premiere. Basically it's like being able to watch it on NetFlix or On Demand style from your computer for 3 days in HD. The premise of the movie sounds cool. I'm ready to watch.

Our good friends Ed Lewis and Kipp also donated one of their *enjoy handplanes to be given away (they are way nice, clean and work!)

, GoPro HD donated a camera, and Cyrus is giving away a Korduroy Tee and signed DVD. So not only do you get to see the movie but you get a chance to win an amazing giveaway package just like a real premiere.

So buy a ticket at http://premiere.thesurfnetwork.com/?tag=leucadia
and you will be automatically entered to win. Good luck and happy viewing and surfing. CM

Another Satisfied Slider

Two weeks ago I got my Enzo egg from JP at Murphy Surfboards. I was not sure how well
it would work for me coming off a longboard. But JP was exactly right.  I can ride it in anything
from waist high on up no problem - and it paddles great and turns awesome. I am 100% satisfied.
Thanks JP.

Zach's Left

Here's a note from Zach Polletta and his trusty 6'-4".

"Well here's the latest from Baja two weekends ago. Definitely one of the most epic sessions of my life, all thanks to Dennis. I surfed 8 hours that day.. definitely some of the most magic Baja backhands. Thanks!"

I Quiver

Stoked rider and proud Papa in his "conquering big game stance."

JP's quiver is all about where he surfs. That is La Jolla! We figure that he is now complete to handle anything Ma Nature has to offer: and then some. From left -to-right:
* 6'-10" Reefwalker: 14x21x15x3 thick. For the big man in tight places.
*7'-5" Enzo tri : 15-1/2x21-1/2x15x2-15/16 thick. All-around travel board when he doesn't want to ride his LB's. Notice the highly evolved rattle-can paints by none other than JP himself!
*7'-10" tri Cali Gun: 13x21-1/2x14x2-15/16thick. This has paddle power and sticks in the pocket. Just look at the blog on any of the bigger waves in some of the recent posts. It's easy to see that it handles all drops,(well, almost all),and doesn't bog in the barrel. All good!.
* 9'-0" Southwind tri pin; 16-3/4x22-1/4x13-3/4x3-1/16" thick. When I first worked out the Southwind, it was intended to be a 2+1 fin set-up. JP changed all that with his aggressive approach and sheer mass. @ 200-210# he has the strength to push those large tri's into the barrel and off the top.
* 9'-3" Comp pin noser: 18-1/2x22-3/4x14-1/2x3"thick. The first of the quiver is always the hardest. How does a guy figure out what to ride everyday in crowded conditions. This has been an ongoing 20 year project. Japers LOVES trifin set-ups. That being said, don't try this without adult supervision. A fella could easily get caught too far forward with not enough umph to turn through the next section. However, we do not see that problem with Mr. Marengo. This is a fab noserider in modern ripper's dress. The last board on the right is the back-up Southwind. We now know which stick he can't go without. A special thanks goes to Joe Roper for sponsoring Jean-Paul. Without his personal attention, JP might have missed a set or two this last winter!
* 8'-5" Regulator Pintail: 12x20-3/4x13x3-3/16 thick. Sitting in front of everybody else is what this board is all about. Paddle out quickly, take off early (or late), and cruise through the maelstrom as if you own it. Wait 'till you guys see the new photos.
Not shown in these pics is our Piece du resistance--the 9'-8" pintail charger. Coming in at 10-1/2x20-1/4x12x3-1/4thick it is the big brother to the 8'-5". We're going travelin' this winter and a guy has to cover all the bases to be in the game. Thanks for listening.
dm out...for now

Aaron Goulding

From time to time we get shots of team riders from local photographer Aaron Goulding/JAG Media Productions. His images are usually pretty unique and capture some incredible views and angles. This one is sweet. Thanks Aaron.

This is one of my best buddies of all time at Punta Pequena. Greg Spaniol is a La Jolla native and ripper of the Shores, Blacks and Cliffs. He does the Bay a few times a year and it looks like they nailed it one more time. dm

Captain America

Dreams can take you in many directions - and sometimes they don't make any sense at all. But sometimes.....they do.

This is Jeff Werbelow. Owner of a new 9'-0" Murphy performance longboard.
He rode his buddies board, which is the same model, then literally had a dream that same night about the Red Baron model and Captain America. The dream was powerful my friends. He then hurried to the phone to order this new sled. Watch out villainous, over-zealous wave riders.
Specs: 9'-0" x 2-5/8" thick x 14" tail. 2+1 w/FCS. Sanded finish. Red Baron template.
Special thanks to Ed Lewis, Ed Lewis Design/The Leucadia Project, with colors and graphics.
